VOLCANO!

On the island of Hawaii, there are 9 hazard zones in case of a volcano. These hazard zones are based on lava flow from a volcano. These zones were first prepared in 1974 and revised in 1987. More than 25% of zone 1 (the most hazardous) has been covered by lava since 1800. 15-25% of zone 2 has been covered by lava since 1800. 1-5% of zone 3 has been covered since 1800 and about 5% of zone 4 has been destroyed by lava in 1800. These zones are mapped out on http://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/hazards/maps.html and can further be analyzed through the explanation given on the same page. I thought it was interesting that zone 3 has been covered by 1-5% and zone 4 by 5%. Wouldn't they consider zone 4 to be more hazardous and therefore call it zone 3? Whatever the case may be, the map provides an organized emergency plan for all those living in Hawaii.
