Fishing: An expensive Hobby

I was recently looking to get a new boat. New boats prices are unbieleveable, in fact so are used boats. Not to mention how much it costs to fill a boat up with gas, now that gas prices are so high. There is also the cost of keeping the boat in a shed or a wet slip. Along with a new boat, there is the cost of reels and rods which depending on what type of fishing you do it can get pretty expensive. When buying rods and reels, remember that you get what you pay for so if its really cheap than its probably not to good. Now that you have a boat, storage, and poles you also need to get lures and tackle which includes hooks, artificial baits, weights, line, a net and anything else you need. Now you also need to get some bait which varies in cost. Now you are ready to go, but the upkeep of a boat can be quite expensive because of what the saltwater can do to your engines. What used to be a relaxing pastime has now become a cost consuming habit.

  • I would have to agree with drod. My family got a boat in 2000 and have since then only put 30hrs on it. We got a 19.5' Sea Pro 195 fish/ski with a 150hp yamaha outboard. It seemed like a great idea then we found that we didn't have time for it. I took it out a few weeks ago and the drive shaft shattered. AT ONLY 30HRS. THE DRIVE SHAFT BROKE!! This goes to show that the maintenance on a boat can be pricy too ($2500 in this case.) Also keeping it in our yard is killing the interior. I think if you have a place to store the boat, money to support it, time to use it, and GOOD insurance, a boat's a great idea.
