Millions of Viewers Watch Notre Dame Football Games

Notre Dame football has a large following. Rarely, does a day go by that one doesn't come across someone wearing Notre Dame football apparel. There are those people who love Notre Dame, and those who hate Notre Dame, there is rarely an in between. Therefore, the fact that the last 148 Notre Dame football games have been televised by either, NBC, ABC, CBS or ESPN should not be surprising. Millions of viewers tune in to watch Notre Dame play. For example, Notre Dame's final regular season game against bitter rival USC was the highest-rated network game of the 2004 regular season. The game was viewed in over 6.8 million households across the country. Five other Notre Dame games this past season were also among the top 25 highest-rated network games. For example, Notre Dame's victory over Michigan on September 11, 2004, was the ninth highest-rated network game. More than 4.3 million viewers tuned in to watch the game. All in all, as long as millions of viewers continue to tune in to Notre Dame games, the major networks will continue to broadcast every game.

  • I'm not surprised that a press release from Notre Dame points out how wonderful the school is.

Notre Dame is one of the few schools with a national following, whereas most schools have only a regional following (for the most part conferences are geographically based) so it's not surprising that NDs games get high ratings.

What is surprising is that NBC extended NDs football contract despite ND football (on the field, not ratings) declining in recent years. According to No Fight Left In The Irish "the Irish haven't had a skilled player picked in the first round of the NFL Draft in over a decade"; Notre also hasn't won a post-season bowl game in years. Is it possible that the last ND bowl game win was over 10 years ago?.

The Irish faithful are hoping that Charlie Weis can turn things around otherwise this could signal ND's removal from the college football elite.
