Oil Drilling in Alaska

With rising gasoline prices, people are desperate to find ways of getting cheaper gas. Since OPEC controls the price of gasoline by producing only what they feel is enough, we have no control over how much we pay for gasoline. The debate is how far we should go to lower the gasoline prices. The northeastern tip of Alaska is known to be on top of billions of barrels of oil (http://www.cnn.com/2005/ALLPOLITICS/03/16/arctic.drilling. ap/). This is an amount that what make us not dependant on imports of oil from the Middle East and Venezuela. The question is that is it worth disrupting nature and all the animals that live there to get it? Even though supporters of the drilling say modern techniques and technology can prevent pollution and spillage it won’t stop it totally. The chances are that if you are drilling billions of barrels of oil, you are going to have a spill. A spill would disrupt and maybe even destroy nature and the animals that live there. “A web of pipelines and drilling platforms would harm calving caribou, polar bears and millions of migratory birds that use the coastal plain” (http://www.blogger.com/post-create.g?blogID=9525991). Here we see a small number of some of the animals that can be destroyed. So what does this leave us with, is drilling for oil worth the cost of nature?
